MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? God, I’m sorry! Jonah 2 Psalm 6

THE

PRAYERS OF REPENTANCE?

We may say we’re sorry, but do we really mean it? ‘The English may not like music, but they absolutely love the noise it makes.’ SIR THOMAS BEECHAM We may say we’re sorry, but do we really mean it?

ESAU: ‘found no place of repentance, ESAU: ‘found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears’ (Authorised Version) Hebrews 12:17 ESAU: ‘He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears’ (New International Version)

SORRY! 1 I wish this hadn’t happened (1) 2 I can’t cope/put it right 3 Help! (2) 4 God did it/allowed it to happen (3) 5 God seems far away (4) 6 My hope is in Him! (6) 7 This has driven me closer to Him (7) 8 I’ve learnt from this (8) 9 I won’t do it again! 10 Thank you! (9) IS THIS REPENTANCE ?

IS THIS REPENTANCE? PSALM 6 - or just regret … Pain, faintness, anguish, weeping, anger at enemies, cry for mercy and safety IS THIS REPENTANCE? - or just regret …

“You are the man!” “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” PSALM 51

“I have sinned against the LORD.” Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.”

‘I will set out and go to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son” … so he got up and went to his father.’ LUKE 15:18,19 “The truth will set you free”

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free!” “I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you” “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free!”

“You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity!” JONAH 4:2

REAL PRAYERS OF REPENTANCE say: It’s God’s perfect love I’ve offended most of all I made a choice to do wrong Only He can forgive me and set me free, through the death of Jesus I will never do it again

“Jesus, they say you died on the cross for my forgiveness … - but I couldn’t care less!”
