Take out your H.W. and notebook. In your notebook, November 6, 2014 Day E ACTIVATOR Take out your H.W. and notebook. In your notebook, Draw a model of the fraction on your desk. Describe what the fraction means.

Objective: November 6, 2014 Day E Students use visual models, such as fraction bars, number lines, and area models, to show the quotient of whole numbers and fractions and to show the connection between them and the multiplication of fractions. Students will demonstrate their understanding when they successfully complete their ticket-to-go. 6.NS.1

Wants to share it with 6 friends. November 6, 2014 Day E Example 1: (pg. S.1) Has ¾ lbs. of trail mix. Wants to share it with 6 friends.

Partitive division Interpretation of division problems When you are given the original amount of an item and how many “parts” to make. We need to determine the size of each part, where the size of each part is less than the original amount. Ex. ¾ lb. of trail mix split equally among 6 friends.

November 6, 2014 Day E Example 2: (pg. S.2) Let’s look at a slightly different example. Imagine that you have 𝟐/𝟓 of a cup of frosting to share equally among three desserts. How would we write this as a division question?

We can start by drawing a model of two-fifths. November 6, 2014 Day E Example 2: (pg. S.2) We can start by drawing a model of two-fifths.

What does this part represent? November 6, 2014 Day E Example 2: (pg. S.2) How can we show that we are dividing two-fifths into three equal parts? What does this part represent?

November 6, 2014 Day E topic. How do you feel?
