Unit 2: To Good Health! (Cells & Systems)

Diversity of Life ~2 million known different types of living things on Earth Similarities? Differences?

Topic 1: Characteristics of Living Things

Biotic vs. Abiotic Sort the items in the envelope into 3 different groups: Biotic (living) Abiotic (non-living) ?

Characteristics of Living Organisms 1. Require Energy Energy = ability to create, move or change Different organisms obtain energy in different ways Producers make their own energy Photosynthesis Consumers eat to obtain energy

2. Respond to the Environment Living organisms react to a stimulus or trigger

3. Grow & Develop Get bigger Change in structure

4. Reproduce All living things come from other living things

5. Have adaptations Structure or behavior that allows an organism to survive & reproduce in its environment

6. Exchange gases Gases taken in and given off Oxygen ↔ Carbon dioxide

7. Made of cells Cell is the building block of life Cell can perform all of the processes that life depends on Taking in food Creating energy Exchanging gases Getting rid of wastes Reproducing Are microscopic in size Cells CAN be found in material that was once living Eg. wood from a tree NOT found in non-living items

Structure & Function Function Structure Dolphin Tree Beetle Tiger 1. Gathering food 2. 3. 4.

Look at the organisms and decide what structure each organism uses to perform each function Did all organisms have structures for the functions listed? For each function, how are the structures similar? How are the structures different?

Structures can be extremely different between organisms and still accomplish the same function
