Aims and Objectives of Workshop Aim: to disseminate results of a Widening Participation project Objectives: to discuss the validity of curriculum audit tools to stimulate discussion of equality and diversity issues within University curricula 21/08/2019

Area of concern identified Joint bid from Nursing and CHSSC 4 members of academic staff Developed a rationale and initial aims and objectives for the project Project commenced in 2004 21/08/2019

Rationale Recognised the need to develop inclusive curricula, responsive to the students and to those with whom they work Also acknowledged the diversity of our student cohorts Teaching of anti-discriminatory practice should be integral to all programmes of study in the Faculty No systematic evaluation of curricula was being used within the Faculty 21/08/2019

Aims and Objectives To determine to what extent existing curricula promoted equality and diversity To develop a workable curriculum audit tool To make that tool available for use within the Faculty To examine the student experience of teaching of equality and diversity issues 21/08/2019

Progress 1st stage was to examine existing tools for curriculum analysis None discovered that could be used in their current format We developed our own This was piloted on Programmes in both Schools 21/08/2019

Progress Team met regularly to monitor progress Pilot documents were discussed and ‘flaws’ identified A final version of the Audit Tool was agreed by the team Interim progress was reported at the 2nd Education in a Changing Environment Conference at the University of Salford Analysis of results 21/08/2019

Next stage To examine the student experience Questionnaire developed and piloted Amended and circulated to students on programmes in both Schools Questionnaires returned from 98 Nursing students on BSc Level 1 and from 50 BASW students, 23 Level 1 and 27 Level 2 21/08/2019

Analysis of Questionnaires Q1 What informs the content? SW: 72% GSCC, 6% NOS, 6% SCIE More than 25% did not cite Nursing: 25.5% NMC guidelines, 10.2% NMC Code of Conduct, 6.1% NICE,4.1% EBP, 2% Quality of Care More than 50% did not cite 21/08/2019

Analysis Q2 Is E and D taught in your programmes of study? SW: 94% yes Nursing: 93.9% yes Q2a Which modules? SW: 50% all modules, 38% named 3 or less modules Nursing:77.6% Foundations module, 36.7% Healthy Living module, 19.4% Evidence Based Practice module Q2b How is this taught? SW: Lecture 88% Nursing: 87.8% SW: Discussion 70%, Nursing: 29.6% 21/08/2019

Analysis Q3 How was this assessed? SW: only by assignment marking, 74% Nursing: Larger range including feedback from class 28.6% and assignment, 23.5% Q4 Opportunity for providing feedback SW: 94%, 52% comment on E and D Nursing: 92.9%, 46.9% comment on E and D 21/08/2019

Analysis Q5 Is the curriculum delivered in a way that is inclusive of all groups? SW: 70%, Nursing: 63.3% Q6 Does the curriculum prepare you to work with diverse groups of people in practice? SW: 86%, 68% gave examples Nursing: 66.3%, 43.9% gave examples 21/08/2019

Analysis Q7 Do you have any ideas on how the t and l on equality and diversity issues could be improved? SW: 36% gave ideas, Nursing: 33.7% gave examples Analysis has also been carried out to examine the qualitative data provided by the students and is available in the written report 21/08/2019
