Small and Large Bowel Hernia Migrated Into the Chest 6 Years After Sternal Resection  Andrea Billè, MD, Paolo Scanagatta, MD, Mara Gisabella, MD, Giuseppina Calareso, MD, Ugo Pastorino, MD  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 99, Issue 5, Pages 1823-1825 (May 2015) DOI: 10.1016/j.athoracsur.2014.06.117 Copyright © 2015 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

Fig 1 (A) Preoperative computed tomography (CT) in February 2006 showed an osteolytic lesion of the sternum. (B) Intraoperative imaging showing the subtotal sternal resection en bloc with costal cartilages, chest wall soft tissue, and pericardium, replaced with a Gore-Tex mesh. (C) Chest computed tomography (CT) shows the local recurrence in the sternal manubrium in November 2006. (D) Chest CT shows the local recurrence at rib level I and II on the right side of the chest in September 2008. Fig 2 (A) Sagittal reconstruction computed tomography (CT) of the herniated small large intestine and mesenteric vessels without signs of ischemia. (B) Chest CT shows the small and large intestine migrated into the chest and the weak area into the abdominal wall. (C) An intraoperative image shows the small bowels contained into the chest. A surgical reduction of the abdominal hernia was performed, and the weak area of the abdomen was closed with a reabsorbable mesh. (D) Postoperative CT shows the correct position of the small bowels and the reduction of the abdominal hernia with postsurgical soft tissue alterations.
