ON THE Creation of AN electronic catalogue FOR big zoological collections, by the example of THE collection of Zoological Museum of MSU Ornithological Section Pavel Smirnov, Julia Ermilina, Andrey Lissovsky,  Anton Morkovin, Yaroslav Redkin, Julia Baranova,  Mikhail Kalyakin Иркутск 2018

Zoological Museum of Lomonosov Moscow State University Zoological museum of Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of the largest specialized museums in Russia, and, for many groups, in the world. Since 2015, the National Depository Bank of Live Systems has been developed. This project has substantially intensified the digitization and online publishing work.

Ornitological collection of MSU Zoological Museum The collection include about 145800 bird specimen and 183000 storage units. It is the second largest fund in Russia and about 15th in the world.

P.S. Tomkovich — the head of department M.V. Kalyakin — museum director, the curator of zoological part of MSU depository. Yu.A. Ermilina — zoologist E.A. Koblik — senior research fellow A.A. Lissovsky — museum database manager. I.M. Murashev — zoologist A. Klukvin, K. Skulachev — depository database managers. Ya.A. Red’kin — research fellow P.A. Smirnov — zoologist A.A. Morkovin — technician

Data input into MS Excel database The digitizing of specimen information was started in 2000 for new arrivals. During 2015–2018, all dry skins collection labels were inputted in the database. In 2018, the scanning of museum cards was performed for creating an electronic backup. # Museum number Species Location, coordinates Measurements Collector name Preparation form Positioning accuracy Date

The course of the digitizing work During the digitizing, every label information was cross-validated with catalogue cards The coordinates and its precision were found manually based on the geographical information.

MS Access and MySQL database As the MS Excel format is inappropriate for large datasets, in 2016 it was converted into the MS Access format. In parallel, a common Museum server database on My SQL was created by A.A. Lissovskiy, and the ornithological base was incorporated as its part.

Valentina Studio interface Valentina Studio is cross-platform interface for server databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite. An experimental database client program was created, which allows viewing, data input and production of report forms.

Thank you for your attention! The work was carried out with the financial support of the RNF grant № 14-50-00029 «Scientific foundations for the creation of a National Depository Bank of Live Systems» and GBIFS grant funding the project «Supporting data mobilization activities in Russia west of Ural mountains».
