Hurricane Katrina By Flo Turner 6JB

What is a Hurricane and how are they formed ? A hurricane is a severe tropical storm that can form in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, the Carebean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico or the Eastern Pacific Ocean.Hurricanes gather heat and energy through contact with warm sea waters.

What happened ? On the 23rd ofAugust 2005 Katrina formed over the Bahamas. It then came across southern Florida and caused lots of death and flooding. It strengthened across the Gulf of Mexico. However, out at sea Katrina weakened into a stormand hit land again in Lousiana on 29th August. Despite being weaker it actually caused a lot more damage because of the storm surge- or a huge flood bringing the sea onto land during high winds. Tragically the storm surge broke through damns and caused severe flooding and most deaths in this disaster. Unbelievably as much as 80% of New Orleans was flooded. There is around $81 billion of damage.

Where did it happen ?

How did it effect people and the environment? It effected the environment by flooding everywhere and destroying houses, trees, plants, cars and all other buildings. It also effected the environment by spreading water everywhere. It effected the people by ruining their homes and destroying food resources and making water dirty.
