Integrating Quotes in Your Essay Please copy into the Class Notes section of your notebook.

Always provide context for the quote… Again, assume that the reader knows nothing. Provide the reader with a basis for the quote: What was going on in the text at that particular moment in time? How was the character(s) feeling at that particular moment in time? Never leave the quote standing on its own. You have to introduce it…

Consider the Five W’s Who, What, When, Where, Why When you present your quote as evidence, you must establish the context of the quote. With each of the following quotes, describe the context: Who is it who says the quote? What is going on in the text for this line to be used? When in the text is this line used? At what point is the line used? Where in the text is the line presented? Why is the line spoken? For your Analysis, you can expand upon this portion… 

Instead of saying “says”… Unless the words were spoken aloud by one of the characters, try a more dynamic verb than “says.” Petruchio remarks “… Katherina bemoans “… Hortensio claims “… Petruchio comments “…  Baptista observes “…  Katherina concludes “…  Lucentio exclaims “…  Petruchio adds “…

Always cite your quote!!! State the Act, Scene, and Line #... How to cite Shakespeare: Author and page number in parentheses (Act #, Scene #, line #’s) For example(Act 3, Scene 1, lines 58-61). Notice how the period goes on the outside of the quote?

Keep in mind… Appropriate heading: Your essay needs to be a minimum of four (4) paragraphs: Introduction w/ thesis 2-3 body paragraphs Conclusion Monday, April 11, 2016 will be an in-class essay. The quality of your essay is dependent on the quality of your outline! Appropriate heading: Name Date Block Title of Essay
