Three Distinct Activities WebCampus.Stevens Steven’s online master’s programs and certificates Begun in 1999 Hybrid master’s degrees in China Just started NYC Online Helping small schools in NYC area to get online

WebCampus.Stevens: Course Structure Online courses 13 weeks, parallel standard f2f courses Instructors mount lecture notes, requirements, problems, readings, at the beginning of each week. Pragmatic: WebCT without fancy audio and video Management and engineering courses 160 online courses

China: Phase 1 Fall 2001 Proposals sent to 4 schools in China. BIT approves proposal Winter 2001-2002 Programs identified for BIT: Project Management Photonics Information Technology May 2002 Memo of Understanding signed during Stevens visit to BIT June 2002 Chinese government approves program

China: Phase 2 Fall 2002 IT program dropped Telecom Management program added Microelectronics & Photonics program added December 2002 Chinese Ministry of Education approves plan February to April 2003 SARS closes BIT

China: Phase 3 May 2003 BIT reopens. Recruiting begins 50 students apply 32 enroll September 2003 Stevens faculty visit BIT 26 BIT students accepted October 2003 WebCT installed at BIT November 2003 Classes begin Students have surprisingly good English skills

China: Money Tuition Infrastructure Chinese students get a 2/3 scholarship, i.e., pay less than $10K for entire degree Chinese students studying in U.S. pay regular tuition Revenues split 50-50 between schools Infrastructure BIT pays for classrooms, their faculty, WebCT, workstations Stevens pays for Stevens faculty, travel, housing

China: Money (2) 26 students first year Thus revenue to Stevens < $150K in first year Probably lose some money in first year Stevens looking to replicate elsewhere in China
