symbolISM Symbolism is the practice or art of using an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. Symbolism is found in literature when an author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story.

mOTIF A motif is something (such as a SYMBOL ) that is repeated throughout a book

Theme Theme is the main idea or underlying meaning of a piece of literary work. Theme is the universal truth that can be revealed through the MOTIFS found in a story.
