Exaggerated lumbar curve of the spine Lordosis Lordosis is an exaggerated lumbar curve that is characterised by a sway back and lower back ache. It can result from excess weight around the abdomen, poor posture, rickets or can be pregnancy related 24

Lateral curvature of the spine Scoliosis Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. It has few symptoms, but can cause backache after sitting or standing for a long time. Can be hereditary or be caused by bad posture, having one leg shorter than the other, paralysis of muscles on one side of the body. 25

Seven vertebrae that make up the neck Cervical The word cervix means ‘neck’ and seven cervical vertebrae from the neck. C1 is called the atlas and supports the head, the second C2 is called the axis which literally acts like an axis on which the atlas can rotate in a side to side movement. 26

The 12 bones of the vertebrae that are connected to the ribs Thoracic The word thorax means chest and there are 12 thoracic vertebrae, 10 of which articulate with the ribs. The thoracic vertebrae are much larger and stronger than the cervical vertebrae. 27

Exaggerated thoracic curve of the spine Kyphosis Kyphosis is an exaggerated thoracic curve that is often characterised by a hunched back, rounded shoulders and mild, persistent back pain. Scoliosis can sometimes develop form kyphosis. Common in the elderly or can be a result of rickets, osteoporosis or poor posture 28

The lowest natural curve of the spine made up of 5 fused bones Sacral Five sacral vertebrae fused to form a triangular bone called the sacrum which is the strong foundation of the pelvic girdle 29

The sinus can be found in the …. Cheek Nose Temple Forehead Sinuses are air filled spaces within the cranial and facial bones. They are located near the nasal cavity and serve as resonating chambers for sound when we speak. They are also lined with a mucous membrane. 30
