Warm Up 9/4 Indicate the speaker, message, and audience for the speech we read yesterday. Does the speaker use appeals (pathos, ethos, logos) in his speech? If so, where? Find one example of each. Does the tone shift at all? Where? How does the speech’s organization/structure help to support its message?

Learning Targets To build context for a Vietnam War fictional novel. To identify Nixon’s stance on the war in Vietnam as illustrated through his speech. To analyze how Nixon’s argument is built in his speech. To compare/contrast Kerry’s response to Nixon’s speech with the speech itself.

Agenda 9/4 Warm up/review Review answers to questions from yesterday’s work. Work on structural aspect together. Homework – Kerry’s response

Nixon’s Speech (please don’t write on it) Work with a partner. BEFORE you read, identify unknown words and try your best to define them by using context clues. DURING your reading, answer these questions: What did Nixon believe would be the consequences of immediate U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam? What specific events did Nixon cite to support his arguments against "precipitate troop withdrawal"? What is meant by "Silent Majority"? THEN, indicate what Nixon’s stance is on the war in Vietnam. In your own words, summarize why you think he holds this stance. AFTER reading, look at how this argument is built. Try your best to label the speech, chunk by chunk, with your partner (i.e., background about the war, attempt to appeal to the masses, validation for his position, etc.)

Homework Read John Kerry’s response to Nixon’s speech. Complete the following tasks: Annotate. Read the document and annotate it. Use the highlighting tool and the margin comments feature to make notes to self. Evaluate. At the end of the article, answer these questions: How reliable of a resource is this? How can you tell? How useful of a resource is this? What might it be useful for? What do you feel like this resource leaves out? Synthesize. Look back at the content of previous articles. Answer these questions: In what ways does this article build upon, connect to, corroborate, or contradict previous readings? Now that this new piece of content is added to the puzzle, what conclusions can you draw or what bigger picture is coming clear?
