The Greeks had very few roads The Greeks had very few roads. They were often in poor conditions and very dangerous.

Travelers often arranged to stay with family or friends Travelers often arranged to stay with family or friends. However, if they did not have a place to stay, travelers could sleep under the porches of public buildings.

Because travel by land was so difficult, it was easier and quicker to travel by boat. 4

There were many safe harbors in Greece. 5

People could pay to travel on one of the merchant ships that traveled along the coast.

To Ensure a safe voyage, a captain would make a sacrifice to the sea god Poseidon before sailing.
