Symmetry bilateral symmetry Specialized cells, tissues, organs Three germ layers True coelom body cavity Embryological development is protostome Segmentation of jointed appendages Cephalization

Feeding Groups based on what they eat: shredders, predators, herbivores and fungal feeders. Shredders eat bacteria and fungi on plants. Predators eat other bugs. Herbivores eat plants, particularly roots. Fungal feeders eat fungi and bacteria.

Circulation Diffusion: open circulatory system (blood is pumped by the heart and bathes the internal organs. internal cavity is a hemocoel, (holds internal organs) Small species often do not have any, since their high ratio of surface area to volume enables simple diffusion through the body surface to supply enough oxygen.

Excretion Uses ammonia to excrete waste Ammonia is toxic so it needs to be watered down Excreted through membrane Flame cells remove the waste from the cell and filters it Solid waste through the anus Nephridia absorb useful metabolites before excretion of waste. Metabolic waste through the malpighian tubes (helps absorb waste)

Response Ganglia: Specialized sensory nerve cells: Nervous system: Adaptations: Segmented bodies, metamorphosis

Movement Sessile: Cilia and muscle cells: Muscle cells(length of bodies) contract to move: Longitudinal Muscles: Circular Muscles: Uses a siphon to propel themselves forward: Covered in exoskeleton made of chitin which is staged by metamorphosis Moulting which is shedding their exoskeleton

Reproduction Can produce asexually and sexually Done externally in water Pathogenesis occurs Unfertilized egg develops in arthropod https://www.shapeoflife.org/video/marine-arthropods-successful- design

Respiration Diffusion: GIlls: they usually have gills Tracheal tubes: yes they have a trachea, made up of the three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. Spiracles: In ganoid fishes a pair of spiracles, derived from the gills, is used as a water passageway during respiration, the nasal opening of whales are also spiracles.

Phylum: Arthropoda Crustacea: Lobsters, crabs, crayfish etc... Arachnida: Ticks, mites, scorpions, etc... Chilopoda: Centipedes Diplopoda: Millipedes, Insecta: butterfly’s, beetles, dragonflies, etc..
