sustain ability In that process, we want to consider how the systems work together for example the services that our environment provides to us. For example, Intel, the chip maker, not only needs vital metals to make chips, but it also needs extremely clean water. If those resources aren;’t available, it affects its business.

So let take an example. Let’s consider farming practices, specifically the dairy industry in Centre County. In 2012, there were about 1200 farms in CC selling almost $92 million in products and close to half of those farms were focused on dairy production. Contribution to our local economy and offering aesthetics of farms, natural areas. But these farms have negative environmental impacts: agriculture is the largest source of nutrient and sediment pollution entering the Chesapeake Bay. In fact ag contributes 47% of the nitrogen, 55% of the phosphorous and 60% of the sediment entering the Bay. If farmers use too much fertilizer or if it is improperly stored on the property, rains wash it into the streams and rivers and those nutrients that are beneficial for crops, are bad for the Chesapeake Bay, causing algae blooms. According to CBF, Chesapeake Bay watermen supply as much as a third of the nation's blue crabs each year . Oysters, striped bass and blue crabs contribute a great deal to the Bay area's economies. In fact, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the commercial seafood industry in Maryland and Virginia contributed $3.39 billion in sales, $890 million in income, and almost 34,000 jobs to the local economy.

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
