Question 1: A playwright has many tools at hand for developing character. In the development of a minor character in Pygmalion, show one of these conventions has been used to make the character memorable in spite of being minor. (Assessed with Criterion C of the Rubric) Main literary device used is diction Clara displays her education and higher class by speaking in proper grammar. (unlike Eliza who speaks using improper grammar often) These qualities of Clara also showcase how poor Eliza is in the first scene.

Clara Eynsford Hill (The Daughter): Character Analysis Sister of Freddy and daughter of Mrs. Eynsford Hill In Act I Clara is portrayed as being impatient and rude Clara started whining when Freddy, her brother wasn't able to fetch a taxi Gets annoyed easily Shows representation of the higher class “I’m getting chilled to the bone. What can Freddy be doing all this time? He’s been gone twenty minutes” (Shaw 3).

Freddy: Character Analysis Loyal and helpful to his family Falls in love with Eliza at first sight After Eliza’s transformation, they go out together at night Brother of Clara Eynsford Hill and son of Mrs. Eynsford Hill Higgins thinks of Freddy as a fool Treated poorly by his family

Social Class and Manners There is no respect for the lower class Social class and manners are important in the Victorian era It helped distinguish the difference between class categories Many assumptions about one’s class were made i.e. Looks poor because of clothes Can’t afford a taxi because she looks poor

Historical Context Setting: London, England early 20th century Heavy industrialization (Eliza’s father) Specialized jobs Extreme unemployment from 1920’s through WWII People did not associate with those outside of their own social class Middle class was beginning to rise Women becoming more respected
