Preliminary Detailed Design Review P17701 ABVI Upcycling: Cotton Insulation Lucas Jackling, Mitchell Goepel, Samantha Kon, Denning Crenshaw

Agenda Objectives for this design phase Detailed run-through of material requirements (BOM) Discussion of product test plans Plans for next phase Questions/Concerns

Objectives for Detailed Design Phase Develop project Bill of Materials (BOM): “What do we need?” Acquire prototyping materials to get started Order larger quantities of shredded cotton: primary material resource Research product testing, develop simplified tests for comparing prototypes

Update on Shredded Cotton Procurement Team determined that middle material seen at left is very similar to Bonded Logic shred material Therefore, acceptable to order more and use to make prototypes Have 50 lb of middle and right shred on the way from Fiber Conversion

Tentative Bill of Material (BOM)

Prototype Form Designed in Solidworks Will create a 7” x 7” x 3½” thick prototype Made out of 2x4s and plywood board

See additional handouts for detailed test reports Product Test Plans See additional handouts for detailed test reports

R-Value Test An insulation prototype will be sandwiched between two pieces of insulation with thermocouples in between The temperatures are recorded after a given amount of time Using heat transfer principles the R value will be solved for and compared to current insulation products

Smoke Development and Flame Spread An insulation specimen will be placed in a fire-proofed location A flame source will be applied for pre- determined amounts of time Recordings will be made to identify smoke developed and flame spread

Sound Transmission Test 5 sides of a box will be made of acoustic insulation This will ensure that most of the sound exiting the cube will be through our prototype The last side will be our prototype insulation A speaker playing a constant tone at given frequencies for a set amount of time The microphones will register a difference between inside the box (with the speaker) and outside the box (transmitted sound)

Fungal & Bacterial Growth An insulation prototype will be subjected to water The prototype will then be placed in a container and covered in a constant temperature environment After a period of days the fungi and bacteria will be measured

Corrosion Test An insulation prototype will be subjected to water It will then be placed on a copper plate It will be maintained at a constant temperature for a given amount of time The copper will be visually inspected for blemishes

Moisture Absorption Test The mass of the prototype will be measured Then, the prototype will be submerged in water It will then be taken out of the water until it stops dripping The change in mass will be recorded

Full-sized Sag Test Prototyped insulation will placed into a structure that resembles the shape and size of wall studs. Humidifier will pump moist air into sealed test apparatus. The distance the insulation sags will be recorded and then analyzed.

Plans for Next Phase - Detailed Design Acquiring raw material to begin prototyping Running additional feasibility tests (product and business) Developing bill of materials Developing test plans Researching additional topics as needed

Questions/Concerns
