FA-006-089 Review and Clarification of Appendix 15A

Purpose Clarify the procedures listed in Appendix 15A regarding role of a referee to review a department chair at the request of the faculty.

Issues 25% or two (whichever is greater) faculty members of an academic department can request appointment of a “referee” by the EC to review the performance of the Department Chair. The referee: Convenes a department meeting Discusses chair performance with faculty Conducts a secret ballot to determine if recommendation for removal should be forwarded Prepares a report

Issues Continued The process to be followed by the referee is not clear and has caused dissatisfaction. The FA also looked at the process followed for appointment of interim department chairs.

Resources All faculty Deans Associate Deans

Recommended Changes All provisions for appointment of a ”referee” be deleted 30% or three (whichever is greater) may request a vote of confidence EC follows the procedure approved by the senate through an authorizing senate resolution to conduct a confidential vote of confidence EC reports the results to The Provost and the Dean Academic Affairs conducts department chair evaluations and inform the chairs when their term of appointment expires.

Recommended Changes (Interim Appointment) Interim chair shall be a faculty member of the department The Dean in consultation with the department appoints a chair from outside the department when no faculty member of the department is willing to serve.
