INDEX CARDS On the index card, list the following information: Your Name – Write the name you preferred to be called Parents/Guardians phone and email Your Class Schedule – Block Number, Room Number, Teacher (Do not need to include this class)

MATERIALS Three Ring Binder or Notebook to take notes and organize handouts Notebook paper, pens and pencils Colored pencils and highlighter Large Post It Pad

Rules Expectations and Procedures Daily Class Structure – when you enter the classroom, there will be an activity on the Smart Board for you to complete in your notes These assignments will help you review what we learned the previous day Answer these questions on the Post it Warm Ups and Tickets out the Door will be collected every day and be counted as a Test grade at the end of the 9 weeks

END OF CLASS – WE WILL COMPLETE A REVIEW EVERY DAY AT THE END OF CLASS, STAY IN YOUR SEAT UNTIL THE BELL RINGS –NO STANDING UP OR LINING UP AT THE DOOR – STRAIGHTEN YOUR DESKS AND PUSH IN YOUR CHAIRS WHEN YOU LEAVE PLEASE BRING YOUR SYLLABUS HOME AND HAVE IT SIGNED – THIS IS DUE MONDAY

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION On the back of your index card - answer these questions: 1. DESCRIBE what you think of when you hear the word “AMERICA” 2. On a scale of 1 – 10, how interesting do you find the subject of History 2. How do you like to learn? VISUAL? Do you prefer to learn by looking at articles, videos, maps, drawings, graphs? AUDITORY? Do you prefer lecturing and taking notes? ACTIVE? Do you like to be hands on and do a lot of activities and group work 3. Do you have access to technology at home? Smartphone, Computer with Internet Access, etc. (List which ones you have) 4. What is your primary language used at home? Can you speak multiple languages? If so, which ones? 4. Anything else that I should know that will be helpful in the class

OPENING ACTIVITY On a piece of paper – write down everything you know about Christopher Columbus Next, write down whether you think he was a hero or a villain Using a T- Chart: Write down why you chose either hero or villain Read the article “The Truth about Columbus” and watching the video History vs. Christopher Columbus After reading the article and watching the video, did you change your opinion about Columbus? Write 1-2 paragraphs answering why you changed or did not change your opinion (Make sure to use at least two points from the reading or video to support your answer
