Psalms as Songs Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16

Psalms as Songs Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; Ephesians 5:18b-19

Three Types of Songs Hymn - A song that praises God Spiritual Song - a spiritual scriptural message Psalms – Songs from the book of Psalms The word Hymn comes directly from the Greek word “humneo”, which is described in Strongs Greek Dictionary as to “sing a religious ode; by implication, to celebrate (God) in song:--sing a hymn (praise unto)”. It may reference a song that directly praises God. Consider its use in Hebrews 2:12 and Acts 16:25 when translated as “sing praise”. Therefore, we might consider a Hymn as a song that praises God.   The term Spiritual Song is a translation of the Greek term “pneumatikos ode” (see the word “ode” there). Ode is not just a word that describes a song, but a term that describes religious words sung in metrical composition. A Spiritual Ode implies that it is a message that is inspired, either directly or indirectly. In other words, it might be considered a specific scriptural message that is coincidentally being sung. Therefore, singing a Spiritual Song is singing a spiritual scriptural message.

Psalms Psallos – Poems played with musical instrument Psalms – Book of Psallos in the Old Testament "For it is written in the book of Psalms” Acts 1:20 "Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms” Luke 20:42 The word Hymn comes directly from the Greek word “humneo”, which is described in Strongs Greek Dictionary as to “sing a religious ode; by implication, to celebrate (God) in song:--sing a hymn (praise unto)”. Therefore, singing a Spiritual Song is singing a spiritual scriptural message.

Psalms The Old Covenant authorized instrumental music in playing the Book of Poems The New Covenant authorizes singing the Book of Poems James 5:13: “sing psalms” The word Hymn comes directly from the Greek word “humneo”, which is described in Strongs Greek Dictionary as to “sing a religious ode; by implication, to celebrate (God) in song:--sing a hymn (praise unto)”. It may reference a song that directly praises God. Consider its use in Hebrews 2:12 and Acts 16:25 when translated as “sing praise”. Value of Singing Psalms We know they please God since He wrote them - Part of the purpose of singing is to please Him - Our songs are a sacrifice from the heart Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. Hebrews 13:15 Heb 13:15 Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.

Value of Singing Psalms We know they please God since He wrote them They well reflect our desire to praise God - Most were written by David - David’s heart: after God’s own heart - Psalms were written with a heart to God Ac 13:22 "After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.'

Value of Singing Psalms We know they please God since He wrote them They well reflect our desire to praise God They are easily designed for singing - Songs easy to sing - Clear ideas and themes The word Hymn comes directly from the Greek word “humneo”, which is described in Strongs Greek Dictionary as to “sing a religious ode; by implication, to celebrate (God) in song:--sing a hymn (praise unto)”. It may reference a song that directly praises God. Consider its use in Hebrews 2:12 and Acts 16:25 when translated as “sing praise”. Value of Singing Psalms We know they please God since He wrote them They well reflect our desire to praise God They are easily designed for singing They capture our imagination - Vivid imagery that speaks to our hearts Vivid imagery in psalms capture our imagination. The Lord as my Shepherd The Heavens and Hills praising Jehovah The Rock of our Salvation Wasting away without God Surrounded by horrible animals who know not God

God’s Wisdom in Singing God’s wisdom in singing is manifested: 1) Because singing lifts us up personally 2) Because singing teaches us 3) Because singing is an action of unity 1Ki 21:2 Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money." 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, "The LORD forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." 4 So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and ate no food.

Our Obligation in Singing 1) We must sing with our hearts and minds What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 1 Corinthians 14:15 Singing with understanding may include making the effort to learn how to sing

Our Obligation in Singing 1) We must sing with our hearts and minds 2) Importance of singing scriptural songs Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. Ephesians 4:29 1Ki 21:2 Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money." 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, "The LORD forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." 4 So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and ate no food.

Our Obligation in Singing 1) We must sing with our hearts and minds 2) Importance of singing scriptural songs 3) Because singing pleases God For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with understanding. Psalm 47:7 1Ki 21:2 Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money." 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, "The LORD forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." 4 So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and ate no food.
