Making Ethical Decisions at Work A framework for resolving ethical dilemmas. Marc Siegall, 2009

1. Identify the ethical dilemma. Define the issue clearly, and understand what must be decided in the ethical dilemma. Know the key stakeholders, their roles, and their perspectives.

2. Identify the relevant facts related to the ethical dilemma. Gather the relevant facts and critically evaluate the available information. Recognize that additional information may be necessary and go get it.

3. Identify the relevant values in the situation. Determine which values are creating a decision making dilemma.

4. Recognize the influence of corporate culture on making an ethical decision. Understand how your ethical decision making may be influenced by corporate culture and/or corporate codes of conduct.

5. Apply moral standards and ethical principles to resolving the ethical dilemma. Weigh the conflicting values and choose an option that balances them, with greater emphasis on the most important values.

6. Implement the decision. Be prepared to give a rationale for your selection of a particular solution and its possible consequences.

7. Evaluate the consequences and learn for next time. Can you look at yourself in the mirror, and others in the eye?
