Objective: SWBAT formally connect models of fractions to multiplication through the use of multiplicative inverses as they are represented in models. Students will demonstrate their understanding when they successfully complete their ticket-to-go. 6.NS.1

Vocabulary Multiplicative two numbers whose product is one. inverse (reciprocal)

Example 1 (pg. 31)

Discussion ex. 1 How did we choose which fraction strip to use? How did we know to shade in two sections? How did we know to put the ¾ in the brace that shows 2/5? What is the bottom brace? We are dividing by 2/5. There is a 5 in the denominator, so we use the fifths. There is a 2 in the numerator, it tells us how many fifths to shade in. That is the part we know. That is the unknown right now and is ready to be calculated.

November 18, 2014 Day F topic. How do you feel?

Example 2: (pg. S.32)

Example 3: (pg. S.32)

topic. How do you feel?

Closing Dividing a fraction is equivalent to multiplying by its reciprocal or multiplicative inverse. Connecting the models of division by a fraction to multiplication by its inverse strengthens your understanding of the invert and multiply rule.
