Law Abiding Behavior Class 1

Administrative Does everyone have syllabus? Does anyone have questions about syllabus or course requirements? Have you had a look at the home page?

Review Can you explain the difference between a program in criminology and a program in criminal justice?

Today Further discussion of class assignments, especially quizzes Class survey – what do we know (or think we know) about crime and crime prevention? What are “law-abiding” people? Key Points to Understand from Today

I. Class Assignments - Quizzes Each quiz will test the reading that has been assigned for that day or the next few days Will consist of two questions like the sample questions of which you will answer one How to prepare for the quiz If you miss a quiz Why are we using this type of quiz? Watch out for readings in addition to K&P

II. Class Survey What do we think we know about crime and crime prevention? Administer survey Designed just to test our knowledge of a few items related to crime and the criminal justice system Expect to administer the same survey at the end of the course

III. Law-Abiding People What does it mean to be “law-abiding?” What do we call people who are not “law-abiding?” Do you consider yourselves to be law-abiding? So should we consider you folks all to be criminals? Why not?

IV. Key Points to Understand from Today Most of us break some laws, some quite frequently Some of the laws we break frequently are quite serious and breaking them can have really terrible consequences So, calling others criminals while we consider ourselves not to be criminals is quite arbitrary and inappropriate

Next Time How do we learn about crime and crime prevention? How do we study crime? What are our sources of information?
