GUADALAJARA, MEXICO CSU STUDY ABROAD SUMMER 2011 By Colleen Walters CSU Nursing Student

CSU NURSING STUDENT IN MEXICO Every day in Guadalajara, Mexico, was an adventure as I acquired more skill in speaking the Spanish language, knowledge of Mexican culture and the opportunity to practice nursing. I discovered dominant cultural characteristics with individual variations, proof that cultural competence is a continuous learning process and an open mind is essential. We visited several health services in the city of Guadalajara and in the modest town of Juanacatlan, our group was invited to host a health fair, presenting much needed health information to the population; over 200 attended. This was truly a phenomenal experience that has given me a global perspective of healthcare and nursing.
