Year 6: The Legacy Project Welcome to the Final Challenge webinar. This webinar is specifically for the Year 4 Programme. The purpose of the final challenge is to celebrate the Gladiators’ achievement over the course of the programme to conclude the competitive element of the programme To make them realise they are part of a bigger activity that is taking place in other schools

to exemplify the skills Gladiators have practised throughout the programme to enrich the school by leaving a reading legacy from which other pupils will benefit to have fun! *Particularly their creative responses to the books through artwork and drama activities. To foster a love of reading and make them hungry for more books with covers they wouldn’t normally have picked up, more books by the authors they have been introduced to and just the desire to read more widely and think about and share the stories they read, relating them to their own lives and those around them. This could be formally To take on a role of Library monitor or Reading Champion – if you don’t already have these in place in your school now might be anappropriate time to establish these roles Or informally, just having the confidence to recommend reads to peers. Verbally or through Shelf shouters/Shelfies in your Library or class collection.

When is the final challenge? Select your school from the drop down list If you are taking part in a Challenge Day event. You will have received an invitation by email. Please reply to this yay or nay. You can check the date and how many days there are to go by select your school on the website. If your school is taking part in the Year 2 and or Year 6 programmes, make sure you scroll to the Year 4 entry otherwise you may think you have longer than you do. Most of the Year 4 dates are in June or early July.

When is the final challenge ? Countdown. So a month to go.

What is the final challenge ?  The Final Challenge Blog   To create a legacy in the form of a creative reading project for your school with the purpose of promoting reading. Physical Create a permanent display to raise the profile of reading (in foyer/library/corridor/shared space) Create a reading space within the school Create a reading resource e.g. bookmarks with positive reading messages/recommends You will need to carefully document your project by taking photographs and/or a recording to represent what you have achieved. Recordings should be no longer than 10 minutes – so either record your gladiators talking about what they have done or record a sample of e.g. buddy system in practice

What is the final challenge ?   Event Host a reading cafe for children/teachers/parents - share books they have read to widen book knowledge Set up a pop up bookshop to raise funds for new books Establish an annual bookswap Bookshop – weed out old stock from library and classrooms – sell. Arrange the space, marketing the bookshop and organising the books to maximise sales – advising their customers. Make this an annual event that future year 6 pupils can continue – write guidance notes as to how they ran it You will need to carefully document your project by taking photographs and/or a recording to represent what you have achieved. St Matthew’s Primary School: Our Reading Picnic Our reading picnic was a huge celebration of reading. We are sorry that GDPR restrictions mean that we can’t share more pictures. You can see us storytelling and encouraging the youngest children to get involved – and also working in a team with the staff.

St Matthew’s Primary School The Gladiators decided to raise money to leave a library legacy. They held the first St Matthew’s Reading Picnic where they: baked cakes sold off discarded library books and told stories. They raised over £150 to buy books for the school library.

St Matthias School Yr6 decided that the legacy they wanted to leave behind was new books for all class to enjoy. They decided to organize a sponsored read to raise money to buy new books for each class library as their final project. They raised over £1000! Reading Gladiators 2019

To enter the final challenge Submit your presentation via the website Option 3 is the model we will be using next year on the whole, as the number of school participating grows it becomes unfeasible for us to attend all the events in the last half term. We cannot start any earlier as this would infringe on the time given to the last book. We will support this by putting you in touch with schools in your area and provide support materials including a suggested plan for the day.

How to submit an entry Ensure you are logged on Select Submission from the top menu bar Select the Final Challenge link In the Title box enter your school name Select your video file from your documents You can add a description in the box provided if you wish. This might be a comment regarding how the team have worked on the challenge or any obstacles they faced and overcame.   Same way that you have entered mini-challenges
