Kaupapa: 05 / 04 Wednesday Define “respiration” describe the process of respiration in the body’s cells

Do you remember? Describe the structure of jejunum and ileum (the inside) Why do we have villi covering the inside of jejunum and ileum? What happens to the remains of food inside the large intestine?

duodenum (the first part of small intestine) jejunum & ileum (the second and the third part of small intestine)

Absorption in jejunum & ileum

Lots of blood vessels Thin walls Villi

Large Intestine

Good Bacteria, Bad Bacteria

Digestive System Teeth Tongue Salivary Glands Oesophagus Liver Gall Bladder Stomach Pancreas Small Intestine Large Intestine Rectum Anus

Question: What happens to the nutrients once they are absorbed into the blood?

Why do we have blood?

1. Blood protects our body from pathogens (disease causing micro-organisms). White blood cell

2. Blood keeps our body warm.

3. Blood transports substances around the body (e. g 3. Blood transports substances around the body (e.g. nutrients and oxygen).

Why do we breathe?

Why do we need oxygen?

Respiration!!!

Respiration Releasing energy from glucose is called respiration. The glucose molecules chemically react with oxygen to produce energy, water and carbon dioxide. These substances are carried around the body by blood.

Respiration energy glucose oxygen carbon dioxide water from the digestive system from the breathing system USEFUL waste product exhaled How do the glucose and oxygen needed for respiration get to all the body’s cells?

Why?

What have we learnt today? What is respiration? What are the three products of respiration?
