Do Now: Please take a Venn diagram worksheet from the front desk Do Now: Please take a Venn diagram worksheet from the front desk. Complete using facts from Chapter 1.

Characterization Write the name of your character on the top of your page. Sketch a picture of your character.(include physical descriptions, hair, eye color, build) Include at least 3 character traits for character. Include supporting details for each characterization.(quotes from book) Include word bubbles. What does your character say??? Color!!!

Chapter 1 Gist Ponyboy gets jumped by the Socs when he was walking home alone from the movies. Darry comes along to save him with the rest of the Greasers. Introduced to the Greasers. Socs hate the Greasers. Soda and Darry work to support family. The Curtis boys’ parents died in a car accident. Mention of Johnny’s past experience with the Socs.

Chapter 1 VIPs “Need a haircut, greaser” (pg 5) “He’s just got more worries than somebody his age ought to…He’s really proud of you cause you’re so brainy.” (pg. 17) “He had a nervous suspicious look in his eye and that beating he got from the Socs didn’t help matters.” (pg. 12) “Compared to Johnny I wasn’t hurt at all.” (pg. 8)

Chapter 2- GIST Ponyboy and Johnny meet up with Dally at the movies. Sit next to two Soc girls Cherry and Marcia. Dally annoys them and Johnny stands up to Dally to leave them alone. Marcia & Twobit get along. Pony tells Cherry about how Johnny got beat badly by Socs. Cherry tells Pony how Socs have it bad too.

Chapter 2-VIP’s “….she threw her Coke in his face.” (24) “Leave her alone, Dally.”(24) “And Johnny, who was the most law-abiding of us, now carried in his back pocket a six-inch switchblade.” (34) “Things are rough all over.” (35)

Chapter 3- Gist Pony talks with Cherry about differences between Socs and Greasers. Bob & Randy drive up in blue mustang and Johnny looks nervous when he sees car and rings on Bob’s hands. Pony dreams of country, falls asleep in lot with Johnny, gets home late and Darry hits him and yells at him. Ponyboy runs away with Johnny.

Chapter 3- VIP’s “You greasers have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re sophisticated.” (38) “We aren’t in the same class, just don’t forget that some of us watch the sunset too” (46) “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.”(50) “Come on, Johnny, we’re running away”(51)

Chapter 4- Gist Socs attack Johnny and Ponyboy when they’re in the park late at night. A Soc, tries to drown Ponyboy and Johnny stabs Bob, killing him. Boys afraid of getting the electric chair for murder. They run to find Dally for help. Dally gives them money, a gun and tells them to hideout in a church at Jay Mountain.

Chapter 4- VIP’s “You could use a bath Greaser.” (55) “I killed him, I killed the boy.”(56) “They were drowning you Pony.” They might have killed you.” (57) “Money. Maybe a gun? A plan. Where in the world would we get these things?” (57) “There’s an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain.” (61)

Compare/Contrast paragraph Explain how the Greasers and Socs are different from each other and how they are the same. You must use at least 3 specific details as you explain what makes them different. Then explain how they are the same (2 details)

Chapter 5- GIST Johnny & Pony cut their hair and Pony bleaches his so they’re disguised. They watch the sunrise outside church and think of poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. Dally comes and takes them for something to eat. He tells them Socs and Greasers in “all out warfare all over the city.” Gives Pony a letter from Soda and tells them Cherry is going to help them and be Greasers’ spy.

Chapter 5- VIP’s “Our hair labeled us greasers, too-it was our trademark.” (71) “They’ll have our descriptions in the paper. We can’t fit ‘em.” (71) “Nothing gold can stay.”(81) We can’t walk alone at all. I started carrying a heater…” (83)

Do Now: Get your Writer’s Notebook and open to The Outsiders section. On next clean page Title- Chapter 5- Writing to Connect. Choose one writing activity. At least a half page of writing response.

Do Now: Please take out your GIST/VIP packet. Open to page 85 of The Outsiders.

Writing Reaction to Chapter 6

Chapter 6 Gist Johnny asks if his parents have asked about him. Johnny decides they should go home and turn themselves in. Dally tries to talk him out of it but can’t. The church is on fire. Pony and Johnny jump out and when they realize that there are kids in the church. They go in to save them and are seen as heroes. They save the kids but the guys get hurt. Dally tried to save Johnny Pony is okay. Johnny is unconscious and badly burned. Dally is hurt too. Darry and Soda come to the hospital and Pony realizes that Darry does care about him and is afraid of losing him.

Chapter 6-VIPS “We’re goin’ back and turn ourselves in” (p 87) “The church was on fire” (p 90) “Darry” I said, “I’m sorry.” (p 98) “Darry did care about me as he cared about Soda.” (p 98) “Suddenly I realized, horrified that Darry was crying.” (p 98)

Do Now: Please write a reaction to Chapter 9 in your Writer’s Notebook. (at least half a page)

Writing Response In Chapter 6 Ponyboy describes Johnny in the following way: “ I caught one quick look at his face; …He wasn’t scared either. That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes. He looked like he was having the time of his life.” What do you think about Pony’s description of Johnny? Does this surprise you? Why?

Station Activity Chapter 6 Draw the cover of a newspaper that reports on the fire in the church. (picture and paragraph describing event) Be sure to use details from the chapter in your description of the event.

Chapter 7- Writing to Connect Please complete one of the writing activities for this chapter. Label and date your page. At least a half page. Include details from the text in your response.

Chapter 7- Gist Pony leaves hospital, and finds out Johnny is in critical condition and might not live. Pony and Johnny in paper for being heroes. Pony, Soda & Darry worried they might get split up. Cherry & Randy will help Johnny & Pony by testifying Bob’s murder was self defense. Pony & Randy talk and Randy says he doesn’t want to show at rumble. Fighting is useless. Both boys realize they’re not that different.

Do Now: Please take out your Outsiders book and GIST/VIP packet. GIST/VIP should be complete for Chapters 1-7

Chapter 7- VIP’s “He was in critical condition. His back had been broken when that piece of timber fell on him.” (102) “On the front page of the second section it said, “JUVENILE DELINQUENTS TURN HEROES” ( “You mean…that they’re thinking about putting me and Soda in a boys’ home or something?” (108) “I’m sick of it all because it doesn’t do any good.”(117) “Greasers will still be greasers, and Socs will still be Socs.” (117) “He ain’t a Soc, he’s just a guy.” (118)

Do Now: Please take out your Outsiders book and your worksheet on GIST/VIP’s. If you did not hand in your Notice and Note Reading Log last week please put it on my desk.

Chapter 8-Gist Pony & TwoBit go to visit Johnny. He’s in a lot of pain. His mother tries to visit and he doesn’t want to see her, then passes out. Dally’s upset and talks about beating Socs for Johnny. Cherry gives them info about Socs. Randy not fighting. Pony & Cherry realize not so different – sunset same.

Chapter 8- VIP’s “He’s been asking for them. It can’t hurt now.” (119) “We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason.” (122) “We got to get even with the Socs. For Johnny.” (125) “Can you see the sunset real good from the West side?” (129)

After Chapter 9 Reaction in Writer’s Notebook. Writing Activity for Chapter 9 Complete GIST/VIP

Chapter 9- Gist Greasers get ready for rumble. Pony questions why they fight. Dally joins rumble. Pony kicked in head. Greasers win. Pony & Dally race to hospital to see Johnny. Johnny tells Pony “Stay Gold” before he dies. Dally very upset.

Chapter 9- VIP’s “The rumble was on. Dallas Winston ran to join us. (143) “Pony…you get tough like me and you don’t get hurt.” (147) “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.” “Oh, damnit, Johnny, don’t die, please…don’t die. (149)

Chapter 10- Gist Pony goes home after hospital in a daze to tell the gang that Johnny is dead. Dally calls for gang to meet him after he just robbed a grocery store. Dally pulls out his heater and is shot down by police. Pony collapses, and is in and out of consciousness, for days.

Chapter 10- VIP’s “Johnny…he’s dead.” (152) “Dallas is gone,” “He ran out like the devil was after him. He’s gonna blow up. He couldn’t take it.” (152) “Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted. (154) “Nobody would write editorials praising Dally.” “Two friends of mine had died that night: one a hero, the other a hoodlum.” (154) “I told you you were in no condition for a rumble. Exhaustion, shock, minor concussion…” (156)

Do Now: Please make sure you have a book. Take out your GIST/VIP packet. Should have Chapters 1-10 completed.** Due Wednesday for a grade.***** Open your Writer’s Notebook to a clean page in The Outsiders section.

Chapter 10 What challenges has Pony endured throughout the novel??? In this chapter, Pony is sick and suffering from exhaustion, shock and a minor concussion. Why??? What challenges has Pony endured throughout the novel??? Make a list with your partner of all that he’s faced.

What challenges did Ponyboy endure throughout the novel?? Both parents died 8 months ago He gets jumped by Socs Gets slapped by Darry and runs away Almost gets drowned by Socs in fountain Johnny saves his life, but kills Bob Hiding out in church Save children from burning church Fights in rumble, and gets kicked in the head Seeing his friend, Johnny die from his injuries Seeing Dally get shot by police Constant worrying that he and Soda would have to go live in a boys home.

Chapter 11- GIST While Pony’s recuperating, Randy comes to visit him, and Randy says he’s going to tell the truth about what happened to Bob. Pony says he killed Bob.

Chapter 11- VIP’s “Listen to me, Pony. You didn’t do anything. It was your friend Johnny that had the knife…”.(165) “He’s still pretty racked up mentally and emotionally. “ (166) “He’d never called me that before. Soda was the only one he ever called “little buddy.” (166)

Chapter 10-11 Sketch a scene for one of these chapters, and explain its significance. Give it a title. Be sure to use details from the chapter.

Chapter 12- GIST At the hearing, Ponyboy is acquitted and the whole case was closed. Pony’s not acting like himself. He starts to act like Dally. Darry yells at Ponyboy and Soda runs out of house as the brothers argue. He feels like the middleman, and the boys promise they won’t fight anymore. Pony finds letter from Johnny. Johnny’s message to Pony is “Stay Gold”. Pony is failing English and needs to write a theme to pull up his grade. He writes this story as his theme.

Chapter 12- VIP’s “Ponyboy, listen, don’t get tough. You’re not like the rest of us and don’t try to be…” (171) “You’re living in a vacuum, Pony, and you’re going to have to cut it out. …you don’t stop living because you lose someone.” (173) “We’re all we’ve go left. We ought to be able to stick together against everything” (176) “Like the way you dig sunsets, Pony. That’s gold. Keep that way, it’s a good way to be.” (178) “Someone should tell their side of the story, and maybe people would understand then and wouldn’t be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore.” (179)

Final Reflection What do you think about the ending of this book? Please explain your thoughts and feelings about how it all ended. Was it what you expected? What do you think Ponyboy learned from his experiences throughout the novel??
