30 / 03 Thursday Kaupapa: Describe how the nutrients from the food are absorbed into the blood stream while passing through the jejunum & ileum
Can you remember? What is digestion? Describe what happens to the food while inside the stomach Describe what happens to the food while inside the duodenum
Digestive System Teeth Tongue Salivary Glands Oesophagus Liver Gall Bladder Stomach Pancreas Small Intestine Large Intestine Rectum Anus
Part One: Mouth What happens to the food in the mouth?
Part Two: Oesophagus
Part Three: Stomach
Part Four: Duodenum duodenum (the first part of small intestine)
Stomach Liver Pancreas Gall Bladder Duodenum
Liver (produces bile) Pancreas (Produces pancreatic juice) Duodenum
What happens next?
duodenum (the first part of small intestine) jejunum & ileum (the second and the third part of small intestine)
Absorption in jejunum & ileum
Absorption in the jejunum & ileum The food that has passed through the duodenum enters jejunum, then ileum – the rest of the small intestine. Then the nutrients from the digested food get absorbed into the blood stream through the thin walls of the jejunum and ileum.
Lots of blood vessels Thin walls Villi
Dialysis Tubing Investigation Aim: to investigate how only small molecules can move across the walls of dialysis tubing glucose starch water + very thin dialysis bag
Dialysis Tubing Investigation Put glucose and starch solution into a dialysis tubing (the “sausage”) and seal both ends. Submerge the sausage in a beaker of water. Add a few drops of iodine solution to the water in the beaker. What do you expect to see? Why?
What have we learnt today? What are the names of the parts that the food goes to after going through the duodenum? What happens to the nutrients in the food?
