1. Where is Cambridge? Cambridge is in the east of England.It is fifty miles(80 km) north of London and it is forty miles(64km) from the nearest sea.Cambridge is in the region of east England. Here is a map of the region. What are the main roads to Cambridge? Is there a motorway? (on maps a motorway is an M road). Which is the main road to London? Can you see a railway line on the map? Ask somebody or just look at the map

2. By the river:

Bridges: The river Cam runs trough Cambridge. The name Cambridge is – bridge over the Cam. The Romans came here in the first century A.D. and built the first bridge. Now there are a lot of bridges over the river. One is the Bridge of Sighs. It goes across the river to St John’s College is a part of Cambridge University.

The river also runs behind King’s College and under King’s Bridge The river also runs behind King’s College and under King’s Bridge. Students of the university can study here because it is often very quiet. But in summer the river is sometimes very busy. People take rowing boats and puns on the water. You can here the boats and puns. It is quite cheap.

Then they have to put the pole back into the water and push again. The boat moves quietly and slowly along the river. Punts are quite big, so you can read on a punt or eat lunch. But be carefull. Don’t fall in!

There is a bridge at the back of Queens’ College. It is the “Mathematical” Bridge or Queens’ Bridge. Clare Bidgre is at the back of Clare College. Universities In 1086 there were only about four hundred houses in Cambridge. But Cambridge grew quickly. In the 1300s it was a busy market town. In the years 1250 – 1550 the university grew quickly too. Students and teachers came from Oxford and started their own university in Cambridge. The first university college was Peterhouse College. The Bishop of Ely founded it. He bought two houses and gave money to students. The college opened in 1284. In the old college there was also a chapel. People in the college built the chapel again in the 1600s. The first students often had lessons in the chapel.

Trinity College is the largest college in the university Trinity College is the largest college in the university.It has over 800 students.This college has many Nobel prize winners. There is also very good library and big statue of King Henry VII inside. The Great Court of the college is very big.You reach it throught the Great Gate in Trinity Street.

King’s College opened in 1441 King’s College opened in 1441. King Henry VI (1422 – 61) gave money to the college. The chapel was the first building. The ceiling of King’s College is very beautifull. Visit the chapel! You can also see there Rubens’ famous painting “The Adoration of the Magi”.

Magdalene College opened in 1542 Magdalene College opened in 1542. The famous English writer Samuel Pepys gave his books and bookcases to the college.You can see his diary there too. Pepys wrote in this diary every day from 1660 to 1669. It tells you about the history of England during the Great Fire of London and the Great Plague 1665- 1667.

Not all the university buildings are old Not all the university buildings are old. New Hall has a very moder dining room. New Hall opeened in the 1960s. It was a college for women only but now men can study there too. The newest college is Robinson College. It opened in 1977.

6. Student life in Cambridge: There are about 9,500 “undergraduate” students at the university. The university teachers often live in the colleges too. They give tutorials to the students. Students also go to big lectures in other parts of the university.

Every year, there is also a “rag” week Every year, there is also a “rag” week. Students from the university and from the College of Advanced Technology work together. They collect money from people in the city and they have a procession and a lot of dances.

7. Churches, museums and gardens: The larges museum in Cambridge is the Fitzwilliam Museum. It opened in 1816. In the museum, there are many old Greek, Egyptian and Roman objects as well as statues, paintings and old coins.

There are only five round churches in England so you must visit it! Cambridge has a round church. It is 800 years old, and is one of the oldest buildings. In the rooms of the museum there are old tools, kitchen objects, farm tools, children’s toys.You will learn a lot here about the history of the town and about the university.

Papworth Hospital There is a famous hospital just outside Cambridge. Its name is Papworth Hospital and it is in the village of Papworth Everard. It is a heart hospital. A lot of young and old people have got new hearts at this hospital. In the picture above, some of these people with new hearts are yogging for charity.

8. Visits outside Cambridge! Visitors to Cambrige often go to Grandchester and wrote poems about the village: “Stands the church clock at ten to three? And is there honey still for tea?” The village next to Grandchester is Trumpington. In the church there is a very old brass monument of Sir Roger de Trumpington.
