North Central & Southern Region ANR Extension Introduction

100 Years of rich history of addressing our clientele’s issues & needs . . . Will the next 100 years bring the same success?

Key Legislation Land Grants Acts 1862 1890 1994

Key Legislation - Hatch Act of 1887 Created agricultural experiment stations for the land-grant universities  The Hatch Act of 1887 created agricultural experiment stations for the land-grant universities. William Henry Hatch (September 11, 1833 – December 23, 1896) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. He was the namesake of the Hatch Act of 1887, which established state agricultural experiment stations for the land-grant colleges. Hatch is also the namesake of Hatch Hall, a Residence Hall at the University of Missouri.

Cooperative Extension The Smith-Lever Act Created Cooperative Extension May 8, 1914 With the success of the Morrill and Hatch Acts, leaders recognized the value of research-based information in the hands of the many. In support of this idea, the Smith Lever Act was passed in 1914.   With this act, Congress directed the land-grant universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to work together to establish a new program to provide for both the "practical and liberal higher education of all Americans."
