Essential Skills to Succeed in Your Construction Career Decision Making Oral Communication Problem Solving Thinking Skills Decision Making: Making a choice among options. Oral Communication: Conveying or exchanging information verbally. Problem Solving: Coming up with solutions to challenges. Thinking Skills: Finding and evaluating information to make decisions, solve problems, and plan and organize job tasks. Working with Others: Interacting with co-workers to get the job done. Active Listening Skills: Communication technique that requires the listener to fully concentrate on what is being said rather than just passively “hearing” the message, understand, respond and then remember what is being said. Writing: Conveying ideas by writing text. Continuous Learning: Improving your skills and knowledge on a regular ongoing basis. Working with Others Active Listening Skills Writing Continuous Learning

Being an Effective Leader Communicate Clearly and Effectively Delegate Tasks Communicate clearly and effectively to others involved in the Chapter. Evaluate progression and adherence to deadlines on a routine basis. When something changes, you may need to re-prioritize the Chapter’s planned activities and tasks. Delegate tasks to those capable of completing them, or assign members to oversee areas. Reassess the Chapter’s Status and Prioritize Activities

Training to be an Effective Leader   Topic: Date: Presenter: Session 1: “Conducting an Audit/Review of Chapter Financial Records” Tuesday October 4, 2016 7PM ET Anne Pfleger, CIT NAWIC Treasurer Session 2: “Do’s & Don’ts of Meeting Minutes” November 15, 2016 6PM CT Diane Mike, CBT NAWIC Secretary Session 3: “Treasurer Duties & Keeping Records” Wednesday November 30, 2016 Session 4: “Chapter Vice President as Committee Chair Coordinator” Thursday December 8, 2016 Dove Sifers-Putman, CBT NAWIC Vice President Session 5: “Active Listening – for Chapter Presidents” January 2017 Catherine Schoenenberger NAWIC President-Elect Session 6: “NAWIC Election Protocol – Chapter, Regional, National” February Deb Gregoire, CIT NAWIC Parliamentarian This year the National Board will be conducting 11 training sessions on a variety of topics to be an effective leader.​ ​ Conducting an Audit/Review of Chapter Financial Records was the first session held on Tuesday Oct. 4th 7PM ET. This session was geared towards 2015-2016 Chapter Treasurers/Presidents and Audit Committee Members but any member is welcome to attend. It covered the why and how of conducting an audit and review of the Chapter financial records. The recording of this presentation can be found on the national website in the member center under Member Center – Toolbox –  Leadership Training - YouTube Channel. Do’s & Don’ts of Meeting Minutes facilitated by Diane Mike, National Secretary will be held on Tuesday November 15th at 6PM CT. This session is geared towards 2016-2017 Chapter Secretaries and Presidents. It will cover what to do and not do in regards to meeting minutes. The difference between board and general meeting minutes, what is included and what to do when they are complete. Treasurer Duties & Keeping Records facilitated by Anne Pfleger will be held on Wednesday November 30th at 7PM ET. This session is geared towards 2016-2017 Chapter Treasurers. It will cover the Chapter Treasurer’s duties, keeping records and tips for making the position easier. Chapter Vice-President of Committee Chair Coordinator facilitated by Dove Sifers-Putnam, National Vice-President will be held on Thursday December 8th at 7PM ET. This session is geared towards 2016-2017 Chapter Vice-Presidents. It will cover the duties and potential duties as Chapter Vice-President.
