Preparing for a science fair

Once upon a time there were three girls: Maggie, Maria and Melek They have been met at a science camp for girls, where they were involved into several activities related to science. One of the activities was the science fair…

Hi girls! Im Mrs. Experimentalist. I have my own laboratory in my city. I usually support my neighbors to solve the problems they face in their daily life. This week, a lot of people asked for my help, but I dont have time to help all of them. Would you like to help me?

Melek Maggie Maria I think its a very good idea to help Mrs. Experimentalist to solve her neighbors problems! Yes, but is it possible for us to help her? How can we give valid answers to their problems? Well, firstly we should learn how to design fair experiments. Thereby, we would be able to give valid answers to their problems

… a few days later…

Have you ever been in a science fair? Yes! It was very exciting! Groups of children are presenting in a poster the results of an investigation that they have implemented. They also organize an interactive activity for the visitors at the science fair. I found photos of children that participated in science fairs. We can have a look at them and get some ideas

Maggie, Maria and Melek are trying to prepare for participating in a science fair Which problem does Mrs. Experimentalist want us to solve? Well, she said that Nicole wants to find out ways to make her flowers to grow So she wants to investigate which factors influence her flowers growth

the water, the light, the soil, and the temperature are some of the factors that are related to the phenomenon we investigate Can you think of any investigative questions to formulate? I can think of one! Does light influence the growth of the flowers?

We need two similar flowers for our experiment. We should place the first one in the dark and the second in the light. We have to observe their growth When you say similar you mean: the type of flower, the height of the flower and the color? To design a fair experiment we should control other variables as well: the water we will irrigate them, the soil and the temperature. We have to compare their height in the first day and measure it every second day.

How are we going to present our results to the visitors at the science fair? We have to prepare a poster At the poster we can write our investigative question, explain the methodology and construct tables and graphs with our results. We can also write down our conclusions…

Mrs. Experimentalist said that we should also organize an interactive activity… We have to think of something creative… I think that Evangelia, Michael and Rodothea can help us with that! Lets ask for their help Well, we should think of an activity so that the people to have fun and learn what we have investigated
