S1 Chemistry Introduction to Chemistry Elements The image shows how people used to think of the elements. S1 Chemistry Introduction to Chemistry

Learning outcomes Success criteria Understand what an element is. You can describe what is meant by an element in terms of: the type of atom from which they are made up their ability to be broken down into simpler substances. You can draw a diagram to illustrate the structure of an element. Know examples of elements. You can name five different elements.

Which is the odd one out? The water is the odd one out. It is the only one which is not an element.

What are elements? Substances made up of only one type of atom. How many elements do you think there are? There are just over 100 elements that exist in the Universe 90 are natural the rest have been made by scientists

Elements are made up of only one type of atom. For most elements (but not all), these atoms are joined together as molecules.
