Multiplying Decimals 6.1.3.1 Multiply and divide decimals and fractions, using efficient and generalizing procedures, including standard algorithms.

I can… Multiply decimals by decimals Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

Multiply Decimals The Area Model = 1 = 0.1 = 0.01 You can model the multiplication of decimals by using an area model. Let’s try 0.2 x 0.6

Multiply Decimals The Area Model 0.2 x 0.6 = 0.12 Model 0.2 on the grid. Model 0.6 on the grid. Your answer is the sum of the overlapped squares.

Multiply Decimals The Area Model 0.1 x 0.7 = 0.07 Model 0.1 on the grid. Model 0.7 on the grid. Your answer is the sum of the overlapped squares.

Multiplying Decimals!!! NO need to line up decimal points!!!!! When multiplying a decimals, multiply as normal Then count the number of decimal places and hop to the left Add zeros if needed!!!!!

Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Standard Algorithm Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Example: Find 5.08 x 2.1 5.08 x 2.1 508 10160 10668 There are 3 digits to the right of the decimal point. . . Count the same number of places from right to left.

Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Standard Algorithm Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Example: Find 1.159 x 0.03 1.159 x 0.03 3477 There are 5 digits to the right of the decimal point. . . Count the same number of places from right to left. We need to add a zero in the product as a placeholder so that the decimal is moved over 5 spaces!!

Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Your Turn… Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Example: Find 2.15 x 5.4 2.15 x 5.4 860 10750 11610 There are 3 digits to the right of the decimal point. . . Count the same number of places from right to left.

Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Standard Algorithm Remember…. When decimal is out of sight, it is always to the right! Example: Find 0.86 x 0.04 0.86 x 0.04 744 There are 4 digits to the right of the decimal point. . . Count the same number of places from right to left. We need to add a zero in the product as a placeholder so that the decimal is moved over 5 spaces!!
