BELLWORK What do you know about writing a paper? What might writing a paper involve?
PLANNER: Tonight’s Homework Tonight, I want you to choose a topic from the list I give you, and work on opening statements for a paper that would be about that topic.
Test on Tuesday Everyone did very well! I feel like you all have a grasp on what we are learning That means that it will be okay to move on to our next subject… with Catcher still in mind, of course
Argumentative Paper Basics 09-05-18
Writing a Paper... For your midterm in this class, you will be writing a two to three page argumentative paper I am giving out topics as to what you can write about These topics are also to give you ideas-- it’s tough to come up with an original topic sometimes! This paper will be about Catcher and will wrap up our catcher studies This paper will not be extremely difficult, as we all will be consistently writing it with help and critique from one another
Writing a Paper We know the MLA basics-- Header, Name, Etc… But how do we open a paper? Where do we begin? With a…
Hook
Hooks A hook draws a reader’s attention into the subject that you are writing about It can be interesting, but it should not be ridiculous-- someone has to remain interested throughout a paper, and a one-sentence hook and nothing else to support that hook will not work With a subject like “Holden himself is the biggest phony,” what kind of hooks could we write?
Hooks Hooks do not usually mention the book right away-- instead, they are a little broad but lend themselves to the topic at hand This means that they should be on topic, but not obvious Try not to open with a fact-- this can be boring and overwrought
Examples In a world of fakes, it is difficult to determine who is a genuine, unique, and real person. It is easy for teenagers to be someone that they are not-- and it is even easier to rebel. What might it look like next?
Introducing the Topic “J.D. Salinger’s famous novel, The Catcher in the Rye, paints main character Holden as the one unique character in a world of “phonies”-- however, this may not hold true.”-- this would be better to go after a hook! Why is this better after a hook? The hook drew us into the argument-- this sentence begins to set up the argument
For Now... I want you to focus on hooks We will talk more about the body of the Introduction tomorrow Hooks are important because they are the first thing your audience will read It will make or break the interest any reader has in your paper
More Examples! The subject is: The ducks are the most meaningful part of Catcher. You have two minutes in your group to come up with a hook! Examples?
More Examples! Subject: Phoebe is the biggest phony. Examples?
Tonight You need to write at least four examples of what your hook could be for your paper If you can’t decide between two topics, write hooks for both topics! They can be a little silly at first, but need to get more serious and interesting as we get more into writing Tomorrow, we will work these hooks into an introduction
