Excellence in DSF COACHING What is needed? Eden coaches conference – 19 September 2018

AN excellence ‘SYSTEM’ Coaching Excellence is not the issue – EVERYTHING you do must be excellent. It is not about what you know, it’s about how, when, where and why you do what you do The name of the game is living success – having a set of rules and values that guide the direction of your life and the decisions you make everyday Change is critical. But – you need to accept that everyone is changing – the real challenge is to accelerate your rate of change faster than your opposition

AN excellence ‘SYSTEM’ All change is personal – all real change must be made at an individual level – so in the end change comes down to your ability to engage the hearts and minds of everyone in your team The difference between good and great is simple: it’s about doing more – more often. Most people do the minimum – the great ones do more than they are asked and when no one is watching Greatness means being different – it means being unique. It means being first. It means taking risks. No one becomes great by being the best copier or best at being someone else

AN excellence ‘SYSTEM’ Conflict is inevitable. Learn to thrive in conflict. Learn to fight hard (but fair) for what you believe in. All the greatest people in history have had to face conflict and challenge Understand who you are – who you really are – and be happy being you. You can not be successful in coaching excellence by being someone else, living someone else’s biography or following someone else’s mantra. Be yourself – back yourself; Make tough choices every day – and stick to them. No leader who has been successful is known for being a soft, quiet, uncertain person who can not make decisions. Decision making is a core quality of great leadership and a fundamental aspect of greatness;

AN excellence ‘SYSTEM’ Continuous improvement is everything. It is not about winning once – it is about continually challenging, changing, learning, evolving and improving so that you are always striving to be better. Coaching excellence is about consistently – regularly – daily – honestly – reflecting on your coaching and striving to improve. Believe like you are number one – but passionately and relentlessly pursue improvement like you are number two.

Personal skills Communication skills! LISTENING Skills!!!!! Planning and Organising Skills Driven (Energy; Passion; Enjoyment) Work ethic Empathy LEARNING SKILLS! When you stop learning you are a sitting duck on open water in a firing range! Do not only learn from your sport – cross pollination has produced some of the best yielding crops

Coaching skills Technical Tactical Skill specific Tactical Do you understand the coaching process: Explain Demonstrate Practice Review

Understanding the big picture How do you view the athlete? As they are now or what they can become? How well do you know them? What drives them How they think Their backgrounds Their personality ……

Final thoughts We have talent here in the region, albeit a small but growing pool Unless foundation is sound – excellence is hard to come by Be wary of the SMALL TOWN SYNDROME and BIG FISH IN A SMALL POND mentality! This is very prevalent in the region Excellence should be benchmarked against international standards – not our local standards As coaches in Eden, you have to work extra hard to produce excellence in players and excellent players, due to less competition / competition time / exposure
