Making Corrections to Improve Your Grade The Crucible Essay Making Corrections to Improve Your Grade

Step 1: Look at your essay and the rubric What are the things that I commented on? Do you have provable claims? Do you introduce the evidence you use? Do you completely explain how the evidence proves the claim AND tie it back to the theme statement? Do you use contractions? Past tense?? What suggestions did I give to you? Is your thesis statement in the correct place? Is your thesis statement in the correct format? Do you have 4 paragraphs: an introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and a conclusion? Does your conclusion include a “so what”?

Step 2: Making the corrections--Introduction Do you use The Crucible and Arthur Miller in the first sentence? Do you explain who the characters are and what their role is in the play? Do you have a thesis statement that follows this template: Using __________ and ____________, Arthur Miller illustrates the idea of ___________ and conveys the theme that __________________________________________.?

Step 2: Making Corrections: Body Paragraphs Does each body paragraph have a topic sentence that begins with a transition? To begin, one character from The Crucible who illustrates the idea of ______ is ________. Is the topic sentence followed by an elaboration sentence? ________________ illustrates this idea in various places throughout the play. Are your claims provable? Is the evidence you use introduced using the context from which it is found in the play? Does your evidence prove your claim? Is your analysis complete and specific? Do you tie the evidence back to your theme and state how the evidence is proof of your theme? Do you have a concluding statement that summarizes your paragraph?

Step 2: Making corrections: the conclusion Does your conclusion summarize important points of the essay? Remember, do NOT introduce any new ideas in the conclusion. Does it explain the significance of the idea to the world today? Why is honesty important in our world today? Does it “tie everything up” for the reader?

Step 2: Making corrections: the Works Cited Is your works cited page on a separate sheet of paper? Is “Works Cited” centered on the page? Is the entry copied correctly? Do you have a hanging indent? Are all extra spaces removed? Does it look like this? Miller, Arthur. The Crucible. Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, Prentice Hall, 1999, pp.1089–1167.

Step 3: The Corrections Make any and all corrections to your essay. Print it out and staple it to the top of the current essay. All corrections need to be in by January 11, 2019.
