MLA Formatting Works Cited and Annotated Bibliography

General Rules 12 point font Times New Roman Double Space Italicize Book Titles, Movies, Plays, any large work Put quotes around “Short Stories,” “Poems,” “Songs,” other short pieces

Essay First Page Header: Right justified last name and page number Body of your paper: Your Name Teacher’s name Class and period Date (1 Jan 2999) ONLY PUT YOUR LAST NAME AND PAGE NUMBER IN THE HEADER!!! Original Title- Center justified Indent the first line of each paragraph ½”

In-Text Citations When citing your sources in text, there are two ways to do it: Parenthetical citation (Last name #) Because there is “quote…” (last name #).  This should be a page number unless otherwise specified. Make sure to add your period at the END of the citation, OUTSIDE the parentheses. Integrated citation (# only) According to Malcolm in “The Best Friend,” there is “quote…” (# only)  This should still be a page number unless otherwise specified. You can leave the name off because you cited it in the intro to the quote.

Lastly…. SURPRISE! When you are writing about the SAME author, you only have to cite the last name the FIRST time. (Kennedy 15) the first time and (22) or (7) etc. the rest of the paper, IF he is the ONLY author you are writing about. When you do have more than one author, you cannot ever drop the name or there will be confusion.

Works Cited Hanging Margin- Instead of the usual paragraph indent, the indents are reversed. The first line of each entry is aligned to the left, while the rest of the lines are indented ½” Periods- separate each individual aspect: author, title, publication, etc. Be careful! Some aspects, like publication information, will also use commas and/or colons. More on that later

Common Examples Full Book Citation Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Publication Date. Article in a Newspaper or Scholarly Journal (mag) Last Name, First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Periodical, Day Month Year, pages. Films/Movies Title. Directed by First Name Last Name, performances by First name Last Name, FL, and FL. Distributor or Film Studio, Year. Note: ALL of these are technically accessible through websites, which would be a container within a container (More on that later)

Which resource is Which? Identify the following as a book citation, a periodical, or a film. The Usual Suspects. Directed by Bryan Singer, performances by Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin, and Benecio del Toro, Polygram, 1995. Henley, Patricia. The Hummingbird House. MacMurray, 1999. Krugman, Andrew. "Fear of Eating." New York Times. New York Times, 21 May 2007, late ed., p. A1. nytimes.com/fear- eating.

Annotated Works Cited Annotations on your works cited simply means that you will explain what your sources are doing after each citation of a source that you used. “Scientific consensus: Earth’s climate is warming.” Global Climate Change: Vital Signs of the Planet. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. https://climate.nasa.gov/scientific-consensus/. This source comes from NASA, a well respected authority in the scientific community. Not only does it use its own data to support its conclusions, it also uses collected data from other scientific authorities around the globe. This makes a strong source because it has multiple trusted avenues of data supporting its conclusions.
