13 / 09 Wednesday Kaupapa: Describe some of the effects of Ultra-Violet radiation on our body

Do you remember? What is “radiation”? What are the seven radiations from the sun? Which one has the most amount of energy? What are the seven colours in the visible light spectrum?

Demo – UV detectors

Ultra-Violet (UV) Radiation

How skin tans Skin cell Melanocyte (produces melanin)

Rickets Softening of bones Caused by the lack of Vitamin-D Vitamin-D is needed for strong and healthy bones UV radiation helps our body make Vitamin-D

Why is UV so bad???

UV & Melanoma Skin Cancer

Warning

Warning

UV & Melanoma Skin Cancer What causes melanoma? How high is the risk of melanoma in NZ? What kind of people have higher risk of melanoma? What can be done to reduce the risks of melanoma?

Ultra-Violet (UV) Radiation UV radiation has high energy, enough to damage our skin cells (causing sunburns). Too much exposure to UV can cause Melanoma skin cancer. But it also helps our body make vitamin-D which is needed for healthy bones. Most of UV from the sun is blocked by the Ozone layer in the atmosphere.

The Ozone Layer

Homework: The face of melanoma

What have we learnt today? What are the positive effects of UV on our body? What are the negative effects of UV on our body?
