Presentation transcript:

Careers in the music industry some facts, figures and where to find out more If you love music, there are all sorts of ways you can make a living from it – whether that’s full- or part-time. I’m Nick Howdle and I’m the Leader of Wiltshire Music Connect which is the music education hub for Wiltshire – BANES has a Music education hub too. I’m also a musician and songwriter. Part of what I’ll talk about to day is the difference between being a musician and working in the music industry   And if you don’t want to be a musician, there are many other options you could consider. In fact, it’s likely that you’ll end up doing several of these things, in what’s known as a ‘portfolio career’.

Portfolio Career

Where could I work? Example: Bristol 1000 jobs created £123 million generated £45 million created (GVA) for the local economy

Myths It’s a risky business and there’s no future in it The music industry in the UK is growing. Its economic value grew by 2% in 2017, and exports increased by 7% 145,815 people work in the sector, and employment in the sector increased by 3%, faster than other areas Massive £4.5 billion contrib. to the UK economy.   You’re limiting your options going into such a narrow field The music industry provides a wide range of potential careers

Myths You need a record deal or you’ll never make any money More and more musicians, at all levels of their career, are taking their careers into their own hands, and turning their passion into a living   There’s no solid training pathway Nowadays, there are all sorts of apprenticeships, internships, qualifications, and training (including online) for a variety of careers in the industry
