Theories of the Origin of the Universe
Intro to Astronomy Through the early history of civilization, people made observations about the night sky, sun, and moon. They tried to explain what they.
Earth is in the center with everything revolving around it Everything orbits in a perfect circle There is a sphere of stars that surrounds the system like.
Sun, Moon, Earth, How do they work together to help life survive? Our Solar System.

1.Who claimed the “Earth” was at the center of the solar system? Ptolemy 2.Through his famous telescope, who is largely responsible for finding evidence.
Solar System. The Sun, planets, their moons and a variety of smaller objects. * Smaller objects include comets, asteroids and meteoroids. What makes up.
Where it all Began Scientists believe that the universe started from a PRIMEVAL ATOM The Primeval atom was a very hot and very dense mass of energy.
History of Astronomy Views of the Solar System. How did all of SPACE start? No one knows for sure, but it’s believed that… Between 10 to 20 billion years.
 Astronomy is everything in the universe such as planets, stars, moons, sun and asteroids.  2 theories explain the beginning of the Universe. Science.
Earth’s Movement. Rotation Earth rotates on its axis once every 23 hours and 56 minutes. Earth rotates on its axis once every 23 hours and 56 minutes.
General Concepts The Universe began with an explosion, the big bang, over 13 billion years ago. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, contains billions of stars.
 Compare the models of the universe developed by Ptolemy and Copernicus.  Summarize Kepler’s three laws of planetary motion.  Describe how Newton explained.
Physics Section 7.3 Apply Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion The Polish astronomer Nicolas Copernicus was the first to correctly place the sun at the center.
Theories of the Origins of the Universe. Geocentric Theory When was the theory developed and when was it eventually published? Between 140 – 150 AD Who.
Models of the Universe. Throughout history we have looked at the stars and wondered about the universe.

Views & Theories of the Universe

Ptolemy’s Theory Proposed around 127-145 AD Earth was the center of the universe The sun, moon, stars, and planets all orbited in a circle around the earth

Ptolemy’s Theory

Copernicus’ Theory Proposed in 1543 The Sun was the center of the universe The earth and planets all orbited in a circle around the sun; The moon orbited around the earth The stars did not move

Copernicus’ Theory

Kepler’s Theory Proposed in 1609 Planets move around the sun in an elliptical motion, not a circular motion Planets speed up as they approach the sun and slow down as they move away

Kepler’s Theory

Big Bang Theory Proposed in 1927 Universe was smaller than a pinhead, then it exploded and expanded As the universe cooled, hydrogen and helium atoms began to form The universe is slowly expanding to this day

Big Bang Theory

Steady State Theory Developed in 1948 The universe has no beginning and no end The universe is in perfect balance (when stars die, new ones are created – like when a faucet is running and fills up a sink and the sink stays full)

Steady State Theory

Inflation Theory Proposed around 1980 The universe rapidly (and exponentially) expanded in its first few moments. Extension of the Big Bang theory

Inflation Theory
