Welcome and Introduction Pere Mato (CERN) 24-26 June 2009 Workshop on adapting applications and computing services to multi-core and virtualization Welcome and Introduction Pere Mato (CERN) 24-26 June 2009

Outline Welcome Background and Motivation Goals and non-goals for this workshop Practical Information Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Welcome Welcome to the workshop on adapting applications and computing services to multi- core and virtualization Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Some Background Early 2008 started two R&D projects in PH department (under White Paper Theme 3) WP8 - Parallelization of Software Frameworks to exploit Multi-core Processors WP9 - Portable Analysis Environment using Virtualization Technology The ‘kickoff’ workshop took place on 14-16 April 2008 Initial plans for both projects were laid down Both projects work as ‘collaborations’ between LHC experiments Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Motivation Both R&D projects, and other initiatives from other groups, have started to deliver useful results for the experiments Expected more to come in the near future The current computational services at CERN and at the Grid does not support these new applications For example, you can not ‘submit’ a user job exploiting all the available cores You cannot ‘schedule’ a number virtual appliances Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Motivation (2) It is right time to start thinking how to adapt or evolve the existing computing services to support this new kind of applications We thought that we should start with a workshop with a lot of time for discussion Inviting technology providers (vendors) to present what exists and what directions the computing industry is going Understanding the requirements from experiments Exploring the different possibilities and sharing existing experiences Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Aims for this workshop Familiarize with latest technologies and the current industry trends Migrating from Grids to Cloud computing Management of large data centers Understand applications from experiments Initial exploration of solutions adequate to current and future HEP applications Think more strategically than just minor adaptations to current services Perhaps moving away from current practices (like batch systems, resource scheduling, accounting) Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Non-Goal This workshop is not the place to formulate formal requests by the experiments and take decisions on computing services Other structures are [should be] available for this Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019

Agenda of the Workshop Wednesday 24 June 2009 Thursday 25 June 2009 13:30->18:30 Welcome and Technology session Thursday 25 June 2009 09:00->12:30 New Application Requirements 14:00->18:00 Computing Services Friday 26 June 2009 09:00->13:00 Grid Services 11:15->12:30 Summary, Final Discussion and Wrap-up Welcome and Intorduction, P. Mato/CERN 8/27/2019
