Creating and Approving the laws to govern the United States. Legislative Branch Creating and Approving the laws to govern the United States. Unit 3 Lesson 1

Legislative Branch Also known as Congress Made up of a bicameral legislation Senate House of Representatives Most of the work done by this branch is done in the Capitol Building located in Washington, DC.

Legislative Branch Each house in Congress MUST have representatives from each state. Senate has an equal number (2) of representatives from each state. House of Representatives has a certain number based on each state’s population the more you have in your state, then the more representatives you have in the HoR

Legislative Branch Senate Leadership role The leader is the Vice President at this time: Joe Biden The duties are: 1) Call on members to speak 2) To introduce questions for a vote He CANNOT debate an issue/question He cannot vote unless there is a tie (this usually doesn’t happen)

Legislative Branch The Vice President is only there for very important debates or voting President Pro Tempore is usually in charge when the Vice president is not there They are chosen based on a member of the majority party that has been there the longest.

Legislative Branch Becoming a Senator Requirements for becoming a Senator: At least 30 years old Must be a citizen of the United States for at least nine years Must be a resident of the state they are representing at the time of their election and through out their term

Legislative Branch A Senator Serves for a six year term before having to be re-elected Re-election happens at different times because it would eliminate experience and know-how. So by having elections at different times allows that there will always be someone in the Senate who knows how to do the tasks at hand.
