Religion Roman Catholicism is the largest religion in the country with about 84% of Italians identifying themselves as Roman Catholic although only about one-third of these are active members. The Catholic Church also plays a role in the nation's political affairs because of the Holy See's location in Rome. Roman Catholics celebrate every holiday and attend mass every Sunday. They believe in the Holy Sprit and It is among the oldest institutions in the world. The Catholic Church is led by the Pope and includes cardinals, patriarchs and diocesan bishops. The Church teaches that it is the one true church divinely founded by Jesus Christ that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles and that the Pope is the sole successor to Saint Peter who has apostolic primacy.
