Solving Ratio Problems using Ratio Tables

Definition A ratio table is a tool used to organize equivalent ratios.

Visual – Horizontal Ratio Table

Visual – Vertical Ratio Table

Example #1: You can walk 6 miles in 2 hours. Make a table of equivalent ratios to show how far you can walk in 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, and 10 hours.

Example #1: Distance in Miles Time in Hours 6 2

A party planner said that 3 pizzas will serve about 7 people. Example #2: A party planner said that 3 pizzas will serve about 7 people. How many pizzas are needed for 350 people? Use a ratio table to solve this problem.

Example #2: Number of Pizzas Number of People 3 7

Example #3: If there are 1,600 calories in 8 oz. of hot fudge, how many calories are in 3 oz. of hot fudge?

Example #3: Calories Ounces 1,600 8

Reflection How is solving a ratio problem using a ratio table similar to using a double number line? How is it different?
