Status of SF Model Dipole Contract with TAMU Tim Michalski, Probir Ghoshal

Contract Deliverables Complete development of the FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) Structure for 1.2m Model Dipole Complete a 125m long section of CICC (cable in conduit conductor), capable of winding the 1.2m Model Dipole ORIGINAL – complete winding of CICC onto FRP Structure; measure position of windings REVISED – wind 10m (approximately 3 windings) of mock CICC onto FRP Structure; measure position Deliverable was revised for both cost and schedule reasons Final Report on the Contract Performance

FRP Structure - COMPLETE The FRP Structure has been delivered to TAMU Original Delivery Date was February, 2018 Actual Delivery Date was May 30, 2018 Other machined parts for end groups were fabricated at TAMU machine shop and by local machine shop – all parts are completed

FRP Structure – Accuracy and Impact on Multipoles TAMU has calculated projected multipoles based on accuracy of fabricating the FRP Structure The position of CICC is controlled by the machined slots in the body of the FRP Structure

125m CICC Production ATC procured a stranding machine to fabricate CICC Stranding machine is installed, debugged, and operating Prototype run with bronze wire is complete Will transition to SC Strand for running 125m length Can run up to 3m per minute

Winding CICC onto FRP Structure This has already been demonstrated via the mockup winding (last year) Bending tools are being modified to accommodate stiffer CICC (vs copper tubing) Spring back requires 12° overbend and tooling bend radius of 1.83” to get final 2” bend radius

Summary FRP Structure fabrication is complete! Measurement of FRP Structure should yield well functioning magnet Stranding machine is up and functioning with good quality prototype run NEXT STEPS: Validate draw die and caterpillar to attain CICC final diameter Setup stranding machine with perforated center tube and SC strand material Fabricate a 10m length of CICC for winding 3 turns Fabricate a 125m length of CICC for full model dipole winding Wind 3 turns onto FRP Structure (to be QA’d at JLAB) Final Report OPPORTUNITY(?): See if there are enough funds available to perform full winding onto FRP Structure
