Writing a Formal Letter

Greeting If you know the name of the person you are writing to, use: Dear Mr. / Mrs. Cohen, If you don’t know the person’s name, use: Dear Sir, Do not use: Hello! Do not indent the greeting. Don’t forget the comma!

State your reason for writing First Paragraph State your reason for writing I wish to complain about the service that I received at your restaurant. I would like to apply for the job of camp counselor that was advertised in Sunday’s newspaper. I saw your advertisement in the newspaper and I am writing to request further information about the services you offer.

The body of your letter. Be sure to use formal language. Second and Third Paragraphs The body of your letter. Be sure to use formal language.
