SS8H5: Causes of the Civil War

Slavery Did not need it Wanted to stop it from spreading North South Did not need it Wanted to stop it from spreading Needed it to support cotton economy Wanted to take slavery West to new territories

State’s Rights North South Did not agree with it. Felt that states had to do what the National government said. Agreed with it. Felt that the states had the right to govern themselves.

Nullification: (over tariffs on imported goods) North South Believed that it was unconstitutional to nullify laws passed by Congress. Andrew Jackson threatens to invade South Carolina. Believed they states could nullify laws that were harmful to them. South Carolina threatened to nullify the Tariff of 1832

Compromise of 1850: CAUSE: EFFECT: The California Territory wants to become a state. (Gold Rush) It only territory available to be a state. The Missouri Compromise line split the territory in half. California wants to be a free state. Fugitive Slave Act is passed (upset the North) California becomes a free state (upset the South)

Georgia Platform CAUSE: EFFECT: Many southern states are upset about the Compromise of 1850. Southern states agreed to accept the Compromise of 1850 The North had to promise not to slow the expansion of slavery. Delayed Secession (the Civil War)

The Court said that slaves were property and had no rights National government could not stop slavery from spreading to the territories Why was it important?
