STEAM @ Hilburn STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. We are integrating STEAM techniques into our daily lessons. In the second part of the quarter, we will be focusing on a “big idea” and completing a project using the STEAM model. The first quarter will focus on ecosystems and one of the Grand Challenges.

Global Studies & PBL Global language classes have begun. They are on a rotation (A-D days). We will be incorporating global topics into our curriculum. PBL = Project Based Learning

Language Arts Curriculum: Reading The Daily 5/CAFÉ Instruction through Guided Reading Groups (Leveled) Supplemented with Anthology & Trade Books (novels) Emphasis on Comprehension Strategies and Comprehension Skills Vocabulary Exercises Self Selected Reading Heavily integrated with social studies.

Language Arts Curriculum: Writing & Word Work Writing is taught in all core subjects. Students work through writing process. Develop more detailed and fluid writing. Word Work on root words, prefixes, & suffixes. Topics for the Year: narrative, persuasive, analytical, informational

Social Studies Curriculum Content Area Readings Topics for the Year: Economy Revolutionary War Unit Government & Westward Expansion Civil War & Reconstruction

Mathematics Curriculum We use many different resources to teach the Common Core State Standards including the Math Expressions textbook and Wake County alignment lessons. Math class uses “flipping,” and “math talk” to aid in learning. We prepare students for EOG’s and middle school math classes.

Science Curriculum Content Area Information Reading & Writing Science Labs and Activities Topics for the Year: Earth Science (Weather/Climate) Life Science (Ecosystems & Human Body Systems) Physics (Motion)

Grading Policy Wake County uses Standards Based Grading (the use of 3* has been discontinued by Wake County) Each quarter, objectives are selected as the focus for instruction. The students’ grades come from performance in these objectives. Many different kinds of assessments are used. The County is using a new format for interims and report cards. (Please be patient with us)

Field Trips and Volunteers We are working on planning field trips to Washington, D.C. & the Museum of Natural Sciences. The D.C. trip is tentatively scheduled for April 23rd – 25th. The cost will be around $300 per person. A committee of parents will be needed for fundraising for the D.C. trip. All volunteers/chaperones must be registered with Wake County Schools.
