2 4 Year View--BIG Picture Year 1--foundations, early field experience, explore majors(s) Summer--take admission test or 1100 SATs Year 2--apply to School of Education, develop content expertise, experience working with adolescents (perhaps study abroad) Year 3--build content and teaching knowledge, more field experiences (perhaps study abroad)--apply to SOE if you did not get in your sophomore year Summer--take teacher licensure tests Year 4--Fall methods and begin work in your student teaching placement; Spring Student Teach full-time and seminar

3 Teach!! Teach?? Why do you want to teach? Why I wanted to become a teacher… Why I have never regretted this path… What knowledge, skills and dispositions do you think youll need to teach adolescents and be happy in this career?

4 Many paths to teaching 1. Undergraduate double major at URI 2. Undergraduate Arts & Sciences major at URI, then either: a. complete teacher certification as part of a Masters degree program (URI offers this) b. earn alternative teacher certification c. teach in a private school for 2 years, fulfill other requirements and become licensed through the RI Department of Education.

10 5 easy steps to make your first URI schedule of classes! 1. Choose a learning community (be sure to think about any special areas to consider…AP credits, TD courses, sports 2. Grid the times of these classes M-F 3. Pick 2 more classes--grid them and write them on your white sheet 4. Ask Dr. K to check your draft--get pink sheet 5. Copy white draft onto pink sheet carefully. Give pink sheet to Dr. K and head out to home spot on the QUAD CONGRATS! Youve drafted your 1st URI class schedule. See you tomorrow!
